I am constantly working on myself. I’m trying to be the best version I can be. I’m like a computer constantly getting software updates. I read books about teaching, parenting, writing, self-help, encouragement, and how to be a better human books. I listen to podcasts and journal. I have conversations with friends and family about how I can grow. I ask for feedback on my professional goals and how I can meet them more efficiently. I ask my learners how I can be a better facilitator and my kids how I can be a better mom.
I recently started a book called Good Inside by Dr. Becky Kennedy. She comes highly recommended by my therapist. At the beginning of the book she starts with these nonnegotiable tenets she lives by then she dives into the being a better parent stuff.
Right now there are two ideas that I am taking with me into next week.
The MGI- The Most Generous Interpretation
This is an area I can definitely grow in. Sometimes I am so forgiving and full of grace. Others I feel like the world is out to get me. No matter what though, looking at the world using the most generous interpretation allows me to give grace and feel less put out. Nathan likes to use the quote never attribute to malice what can be explained by ignorance. It’s a good quote to live by.
Multiplicity- Two realities exist at the same time
My view isn’t the only view. Two feelings, interpretations, goals, ideas... whatever it may be, two realities can exist at the same time. Make space for that and naturally empathy will follow.
I’m just giving you a taste of this book, but it really is a parenting book I think I can recommend to anyone. I don’t think it’s only about parenting, but I’ll have to update you on that when I’m done with it.
Either way, I’m pretty sure the MGI and Multiplicity principles seem like they could be a game changer for me.
